Best09 Blog Challenge: Stationery, Anyone?

Gwen Bell wants to know our Best09 ….Stationery on December 28.

When you touch the paper, your heart melts. The ink flows from the pen. What was your stationery find of the year?

I enjoy the simple things in life. It started unconsciously and then moved into necessity and now, it is by choice.

I love stationery stores, office supply stuff – back to school sales make me salivate and it takes everything in me not to go berserk for the new stuff, the new stuff, the new stuff!

This year, 2009, I returned to the old fashioned composition book as my favored journal. I found them for something like 49 cents at a discount store at a back-to-school sale in July and bought a whole bunch.

They have been my faithful companion ever since with part of my process being creating fanciful covers for them… well, painting and collaging their covers – which you see in the images here.

I thought a final punctuation mark on this particular #Best09 Blog entry would be to share the first sentence in each book.

The date on the first one says “December, no…JULY 26, 2009.”

“I am looking into the future, to the day after Katherine turns 18.”

August 15, 2009

“It is Saturday morning.”

October 1, 2009

“Welcome to October.”

November 21, 2009

“It is almost noon at my cluttered kitchen table and I return to the page, my pencil leaving its non-xeroxable faces against the paper: truths which refuse to be replicated.”

  1. Julie, I love reading the first line from each book, noticing that the first was begun on my birthday. lovely co-inkidink (my late-husband's word for coincidence. I may just try this collaged-composition book for my next journal. I am ready to begin a new one.
    Happy Journaling.

  2. i love those black-and-white hardback composition books. the inexpensive ones with the wide-ruled pages. the ones that don't expect so much from me.

p.s. didn't you mention 43things somewhere? if so, thanks - great idea. if not, maybe you wanna' check it out? somebody recommended it, and it looks good. (note to self: get a tracking system.)

  3. Wow, very inspiring. I'd love to be writing in regular old notebooks, documenting the tangle of my mind. Kudos to you. I may go out and get me a couple of these notebooks; I know just which ones they are!

    Thanks for your post.

  4. those black and white composition books drive me CRAZY (like i need help - lol) because the covers want to close when I want to write - but they DO bring me that "faithful friend" kind of feeling whenever I pick one up - and I LOVE that you can art up the covers!!

Your post here, Julie, is pulling me to some journal writing (on PAPER - as opposed to computer)- there's just nothing like the feel and smell of paper..sigh

  5. I'm thrilled that Karen Caterson pointed me to this post today ... she finds the coolest people and posts on the 'net! Julie, I love what you did with the composition books. I, too, have an OFFICE SUPPLY FETISH :-) and so had to laugh out loud at your notes. What a great & thrifty idea for using them ... write on! -- Davielle

  6. I love the comp books when you REALLY use them and carry them everywhere and they get all soft and worn at the edges. I often end up collaging the front and back with clipped words from magazines, or images of things that spoke to me during that particular timeframe (the from- and to- dates that filled the book). When I dig through the old ones in my Rubbermaid boxes in the barn, I love the fronts and backs. It brings me joy to look back at myself clipping those things out and taking time to be unplugged.

  7. I love stationery stores and office supplies too! I can recall going to my dad's office when I was young and feeling like a kid in a candy store when he took me to the supply closet.
What fun to look back and see the first lines of various entires.
